Gegründet wurde das Unternehmen im Jahr 1837 von Thierry Hermès in Paris, Frankreich. Ursprünglich spezialisierte sich Hermes auf die Herstellung von hochwertigem Zaumzeug und Sätteln für Pferde. Die exquisite Handwerkskunst und die Qualität der Produkte machten das Unternehmen schnell bei Reitern und Pferdeliebhabern beliebt.
Mit der Zeit weitete sich das Sortiment von Hermes aus, und das Unternehmen begann, luxuriöse Lederwaren, Accessoires und Kleidung herzustellen. In den 1920er Jahren führte Hermes die ersten Lederhandtaschen ein, darunter die berühmte "Kelly Bag", die später durch Grace Kelly weltbekannt wurde. In den 1930er Jahren präsentierte Hermes den ikonischen Seidenschal, das "Carré Hermès", der zu einem zeitlosen Modeaccessoire avancierte.
Die Marke Hermes hat sich im Laufe der Jahre durch ihre Kombination aus Tradition, Eleganz und Handwerkskunst einen exklusiven Ruf erarbeitet. Heute ist Hermes ein Synonym für Luxus und Stil und bietet eine breite Palette von Produkten an, darunter Lederwaren, Mode, Parfums, Schmuck und Heimartikel.
Das Haus Hermès hat seinen Ursprung in der Herstellung von Sattler-Artikeln. Die anfänglich produzierten Taschen waren vor allem funktional und dienten der Aufbewahrung von Reit-Zubehör. So auch der Vorgänger der Kelly Bag aus den 1890er Jahren - damals bekannt als 'Haut à courroies', die für den Transport von Reitstiefeln und Sätteln entwickelt wurde.
In den 1930er Jahren entwickelte Robert Dumas, der damalige Creative Director des Hauses Hermès, die 'Haut à courroies' weiter zur 'Sac à dépêches' - die erste Tasche von Hermès die nicht mehr auf den Pferdesport zugeschnitten war. Dichter und Politiker wie JFK nutzten die elegante Tasche für Dokumente und Zeitungen.
Von da an wandelte sich die 'Sac à dépêches' immer mehr zur modernen Damenhandtasche. Das trapezförmige boxy Design mit einem Griff, zwei Verschlussriemen und geometrischem Überschlag, wurde zur Ikone des kühnen Modernismus.
Für den Film "Über den Dächern von Nizza" kaufte der Kostümbildner diverse Accessoires von Hermès ein, und die Hauptdarstellerin Grace Kelly verliebte sich während der Dreharbeiten in die 'Sac à dépêches'. Als Grace Kelly nach ihrer Hochzeit mit Prinz Rainier III. von Monaco, Hollywood den Rücken kehrte, begleitete sie die 'Sac à dépêches' weiterhin als persönliches Lieblings-Accessoire. Ein Bild von Grace Kelly aus dem Jahr 1956, auf dem sie ihre Hermès Tasche schützend vor ihren Baby-Bauch hält, ging um die Welt und machte die 'Sac à dépêches' zum Inbegriff der zeitlosen Eleganz und zum internationalen Status-Symbol. Die 'Sac à dépêches' bekam darauf hin den Namen 'Kelly Bag'.
Auch die Birkin Bag hat ihr Entstehen und Ihren Namen einer Berühmtheit zu verdanken.
Im Jahre 1984, auf einem Flug von Paris nach London, sass Jean-Louis Dumas, der damalige Geschäftsführer von Hermès, neben der britischen Schauspielerin Jane Birkin. Im Gespräch erwähnte sie, dass sie keine geeignete Tasche findet, die sowohl schlicht, als auch funktional ist. Als junge Mutter wünschte sie sich eine Tasche, die genug Stauraum für ihr Baby-Sachen bietet und sich auch als Reisetasche für kurze Wochenendausflüge verwenden lässt. Basierend auf dem Design der 'Haut à courroies' skizzierte Dumas noch während des Fluges den Entwurf einer Tasche, die all diesen Bedürfnissen gerecht wurde. Die Birkin Bag kam kurz darauf auf den Markt.
Heute gilt die Birkin als das ultimative Investment-Piece. Für den Second-Hand Markt ist dies besonders spannend, da sich eine Birkin in der Regel ohne Wertverlust weiterverkaufen lässt. Im Gegenteil: Je nach Modell und Seltenheit der Birkin, werden die Taschen um ein vielfaches des Kaufpreises gehandelt.
1967 bat Jean-Louis Dumas, der Geschäftsführer von Hermès (1978–2006) die Designerin Catherine Chaillet darum, eine Tasche für das Haus zu entwerfen. Für die junge Frau, die zu dieser Zeit schwanger war, lag es nahe, die Tasche nach ihrer Tochter zu benennen: Constance. Eine Handtasche mit leicht sportlichem Einschlag, praktisch und lässig, für junge Frauen, die zügig unterwegs sind.
Die Geschichte dieser Tasche geht 42 Jahre zurück. Evelyne Bertrand schuf 1978 ihre gleichnamige Tasche als Allrounder für die Werkzeuge des Pferdefriseurs. Die eine Seite der Tasche ist perforiert, damit Bürsten und Schwämme unterwegs trocknen können. Obwohl die perforierte Seite gegen den Körper getragen werden soll, ist das H-Logo zu einem begehrten Design Element für Luxus-Liebhaber geworden.
Each Hermès Treasure is made by hand and is virtually unique.

All Hermès leather products have blind embossing. Hermès dates the handbags using capital letters. Since 1971, Hermès has used letters and shapes to mark the year. This is either a circle or a square. Models produced from 2014 onwards only have the letter.
The blind embossing of the Kelly and Birkin is on the inside of the right closing strap. Since 2016, the embossing can be found in the left rear corner of the bag.
In addition to the date, other numbers and symbols are usually embossed. This allows you to trace where and by whom the bag was made. When a bag is sent to Paris for repairs, it is handled by the craftsman who made it.
The hardware of the Kelly and Birkin is made of high quality metal. It is usually either 18k gold plated or made of palladium. Gold-colored metal with a stamp next to the HERMES PARIS engraving is plated with 24k gold.
The twist lock is tight and stable. You shouldn't feel any resistance when turning, it feels smooth.
The four feet at the bottom of the bag have the same finish as the rest of the hardware and cannot be unscrewed.

The lining of the Kelly and Birkin Bag is made from the highest quality leather. It is usually a grainy goatskin. It is carefully sewn in, the stitching is flawless and there are no loose threads. Other leather is also used in certain models. This is also of the highest quality and made from similar leather to the outside of the bag.
Some custom-made products may have an interior in a contrasting color.
Every Hermès bag is sewn by hand with the greatest care. The seam is called a saddler's seam. Each stitch is attached individually, which has the advantage that the entire seam does not come loose if a stitch breaks.
The stitches are slightly angled, tight and precise. Since the stitches are hand-sewn, there may be minimal irregularities, but the stitching never looks messy.
Most of the time, the stitching is the same color as the leather of the handbag. However, it happens that a white thread is used even if the leather is not white.
