The idea for the Birkin Bag was born in 1984, when Jane Birkin stowed her basket bag in the overhead compartment during a flight and its contents fell out. She happened to be sitting next to Jean-Louis Dumas, then CEO of Hermès. After a brief conversation, she sketched her ideal bag: larger than the Kelly, but smaller than a suitcase. Dumas implemented the idea – and thus the legendary Birkin Bag was born, which Jane later received in return as her namesake.
