In 1937, Robert Dumas observed boats along the Normandy coast. He was particularly impressed by the anchor chains that held the ships in place. This observation gave rise to the timeless Chaîne d'ancre motif, an example of the "intelligence of the gaze," in which the beauty of utility becomes the central design element. The first Chaîne d'ancre bangle appeared in silver as early as 1938, establishing a design line that continues to be developed in many different ways today .
